Build 54. Rear Hub Part 1 (DeDion Ear)
So I have reached the infamous page 130 in the manual (2024 v2.3). I'd read about this page and I did laugh when I came to it. Up until now each page didn't have that much going on and each step was simple and outlined bit by bit. For some reason this page was the opposite and had a lot of things going on for just one step! I'm going to break it down into parts to keep it simple, so others can find a less daunting way to approach it. First here is a picture of this step, which for what it is worth is not that bad one deciphered.
I'm going to be putting on the DeDion ear as part of this step, I actually did this with my kids and didn't take many photos of the before (Ideally I wanted to show the bolts and washers used in picture form) but I don't have these, so this is what I used for this step, I think the manual and other blogs are open to interpretation on this:
Basically a the small bolt has a spring washer loaded onto it, then a normal one, The medium size bolt will have a washer and nyloc on the back of it (no washer on the bolt head side), and the same goes for the large bolt too one too. The bolt that passes through the ARB bracket doesn't need a washer on it due to the ARB bracket, but I chose to put one on anyway as the thread comes out of the nut enough still.
I started with a small bead of silicon on the DeDion tube running all the way around it, and then I loosely attached the DeDion ear using the small two bolts which screw directly into the threaded part of the DeDion bar (I used copper slip on this in the parts which would not be in contact with the nut), that's these two bolts, note the spring and normal washer.
Next I slid on the rear hub (it might need a bit of a tap to get it on) and put the remaining 4 bolts into place, again using copper slip where they might have a chance of seizing over time! These were then torqued to 47Nm as per the manual, and then marked as per usual!
Once this was done I then attached the rear ARB brackets to the ears exactly as per the manual. These are adjustable, but I went for the stock setting. There is no mention of how tight they should be so I went with about 20Nm.
